Enclosure No. 2 to Despatch No. 269 of the

24th June, 1903.

Mr. Chadwick's Report

on the Water Supply of Hongkong.

18th April, 1902.

Paragraph 13. Programme of Operations.

REC(PEG 31 JUL 02)

The survey of the valley at Taitam Tuk, referred to by Mr. Chadwick, is in progress, but has been much interfered with by the recent wet weather. Every effort is however being made to get it done.

Borings are also in progress on one of the proposed sites for the Dam and arrangements are being made for sinking trial holes in order to ascertain more reliable information as to the nature of the ground.

Nothing further can be done towards the design of the large reservoir contemplated until the above operations have been completed.

The necessary particulars to enable tenders to be called for, for the first set of pumping engines, have already been sent home. A requisition for the pumping main, together with a section of the route along which it is proposed to lay it, will be prepared when the scheme is somewhat further matured. This pumping main can be manufactured in much less time than the engines and is not required until the latter are ready for work.

For the temporary dam and conduit, mentioned in paragraph 14 of the Report, I think the sum of £30,000 mentioned in paragraph 12 will be found ample during the current year. It will not be practicable, nor would it serve any useful purpose, to undertake these before the next dry season.

Paragraph 17. Prevention of Waste

An amended Ordinance, on the lines recommended, has been prepared and laid before the Legislative Council.

Paragraph 19. Improvements in Measuring Supply.

This matter will not be lost sight of in altering and reconstructing the Albany Filter beds. Arrangements will also be made for enabling the quantity of water drawn from the Storage Reservoirs to be measured with greater accuracy than at present.
